I am writing as a constituent to strongly oppose the Trump administration’s efforts to demand or collect state voter registration data and voter rolls.
Elections in the United States are administered by the states for a reason. Voter rolls contain sensitive personal information, and attempts by the executive branch to centralize or compel access to this data raise serious concerns about privacy, voter intimidation, and the misuse of information for partisan or political purposes. These concerns are heightened when such demands are made without clear statutory authority, transparent safeguards, or meaningful congressional oversight.
The mere perception that voter data could be used to target, challenge, or surveil voters is enough to discourage participation and undermine public confidence in elections. That harm occurs regardless of whether the data is ultimately misused. Protecting the integrity of elections requires not only secure systems, but also trust that voter information will not be weaponized by the federal government.
Congress has a constitutional responsibility to safeguard voting rights and to prevent executive overreach into state-run election systems. Federal demands for voter rolls threaten the balance of power between states and the federal government and risk chilling lawful voter participation, particularly among vulnerable or historically targeted communities.
I am asking for specific action. Will you oppose any effort by the administration to compel states to turn over voter rolls or registration databases? Will you support oversight hearings to examine the legal basis, purpose, and safeguards — or lack thereof — behind these demands? And will you support legislation that clearly limits federal access to voter data and protects states’ authority over election administration?
Free and fair elections depend on voters feeling safe to register and participate without fear of scrutiny or retaliation. Congress must act to ensure that voter data is protected and that the executive branch cannot undermine confidence in our democratic process through overreach or intimidation.
I urge you to take a clear stand against these demands and to defend voters’ rights, privacy, and the integrity of our elections.
