On Saturday, October 17, Meta unexpectedly – and without explanation – suspended the No Kings Coalition’s Instagram account and locked out its administrators for hours at the height of its latest activity, the No Kings: Vote Early day of action. Then, subsequent amplification of the incident by independent creators prompted the removal of posts on their personal accounts as well.
This is censorship, plain and simple. At a time when large companies and individual billionaires are pouring millions of dollars into our elections to benefit themselves at the cost of everyone else, this silencing of opposition voices should alarm us all, regardless of our politics.
As we head into the midterm elections, this must be taken as a serious threat. We demand that you investigate Meta and bring the full extent of Meta’s use of suspensions and its algorithm to influence elections to light.
