Our nation's history reflects a long struggle to expand voting rights and protect the integrity of our democratic process. However, the recently passed SAVE Act represents a significant setback, potentially disenfranchising millions of Americans by imposing restrictive voter ID requirements that disproportionately impact women, racial minorities, the elderly, those with disabilities, and rural communities. Requiring documentation like passports or birth certificates with exact legal name matches creates unnecessary barriers, especially for the estimated 70 million American women who changed their names after marriage. This bill undermines over a century of progress in expanding access to the ballot box, a fundamental right in a free society. We urge Congress to reject measures that suppress voter participation and instead work to safeguard every eligible citizen's ability to make their voice heard through the electoral process. Our democracy depends on it.
