Urgent Request to vote NO on H.R. 9495
To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Butler
From: A constituent in San Jose, CA
November 22
I am writing as your constituent from San Jose, CA to express my strong opposition to H.R. 9495, the “Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act.” I urge you to vote no on this dangerous and deeply flawed bill when it reaches the Senate. While this legislation is presented as a tool to “combat terrorism,” its language and intent opens the door to serious abuses, including: Allowing for executive overreach that could stifle dissent and punish political opponents. Suppressing free speech, peaceful protest, and the work of human rights advocates under an overly broad interpretation of “terrorism.” Targeting legitimate advocacy groups and nonprofit organizations, particularly those supporting Palestinian liberation or other justice movements. H.R. 9495 threatens to undermine the democratic principles and freedoms that are fundamental to our society. Advocacy organizations play a critical role in challenging oppression and fighting for justice nationwide and worldwide; this bill could make their vital work nearly impossible. I urge you to stand against this harmful legislation and protect free expression, human rights, and nonprofit advocacy. By voting no, you demonstrate your commitment to upholding justice and democracy. Thank you for your attention to this important issue. I trust in your leadership to safeguard the rights of all constituents.
