Protect press freedom, reconsider FCC's news distortion rules

To: Rep. Rutherford, Sen. Scott, Sen. Moody

From: A constituent in Jacksonville, FL

January 24, 2025

The FCC's role is to promote competition, innovation, and investment in communications services, not to act as an arbiter of truth in journalism. Reinstating complaints against news networks over alleged bias or distortion sets a dangerous precedent that undermines press freedoms enshrined in the First Amendment. News outlets must have editorial independence to report without fear of retaliation or content-based regulation from the government. I urge the commission to reconsider this action, which could chill free speech and open the door to censorship under the guise of rooting out "distortion." A free and independent press is vital for our democracy.
