The tragic loss of 19 lives in Kentucky due to insufficient funding for the National Weather Service is unacceptable. These were preventable deaths that occurred because vital weather monitoring and forecasting capabilities have been compromised. Deliberate efforts to undermine the NWS by leaving critical positions vacant and cutting resources have left communities vulnerable during severe weather events. This reckless dismantling of a crucial public safety agency cannot continue. Immediate action must be taken to fully staff and fund the NWS to ensure no more lives are needlessly lost due to an inability to accurately track and warn about dangerous storms. The consequences of these shortsighted policies have proven deadly, and this catastrophe demands an immediate course correction to prioritize preparedness over politics and safeguard American lives.
