The proposed elimination of the Public Library Fund by House Republicans in Ohio's state operating budget threatens to severely undermine library services and programs across the state. Libraries are vital community institutions that serve people of all ages and backgrounds, providing far more than just books – they offer educational resources, technology access, literacy programs, job assistance, and safe public spaces. Cutting this funding, which could amount to over $100 million compared to the governor's proposal, would force difficult decisions that reduce services or require burdensome local tax increases. Libraries uplift communities and create opportunities for learning, discovery, and personal growth. They democratize access to knowledge and empower people to better themselves. Stripping away their funding disregards their immense value to society. We must protect the Public Library Fund to preserve these essential public resources that enrich millions of Ohioans' lives. Libraries are an investment in our present and future that should be prioritized, not minimized through draconian budget cuts. I urge you to restore full funding to the Public Library Fund in the final state budget.
