Oppose Age Based Taxes On Essential Technology For Minors

To: Gov. Whitmer, Sen. Bumstead, Rep. Roth

From: A constituent in Beulah, MI

February 2

I am a Michigan resident writing to express concern about proposals to impose age-based taxes or economic penalties on individuals under 18, including targeted taxes on electronic devices. Access to phones, computers, and tablets is no longer optional for minors. These devices are essential for education, communication with schools and caregivers, health and safety, and participation in modern civic life. Targeting minors with additional taxes based solely on age is inequitable and regressive. Children and teens cannot vote, do not control household income, and lack explicit legal protections against age-based economic discrimination under Michigan law. I urge you to oppose any legislation that economically penalizes minors or restricts their access to essential technology, and instead support policies that protect youth access, educational equity, and family affordability. Please let me know your position on this issue.
