Vote against current budget bill
To: Sen. Baldwin, Sen. Johnson, Rep. Fitzgerald
From: A constituent in Waukesha, WI
June 18
I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I am writing to urge you to vote against the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" under Senate consideration. A budget should manage our nation's money responsibly, using tax dollars to benefit the most people without creating excessive debt. H.R. 1 fails these standards and does the opposite. This bill would reduce federal revenue by $4.5 trillion over the next decade by making the 2017 Trump tax cuts permanent, primarily benefiting the wealthy and big businesses while reducing revenue needed for essential services. It also rolls back environmental protections for our lands, air, and water, prioritizing corporate profits over Wisconsin families' quality of life. The bill adds millions in border enforcement and military spending, increasing our national debt without benefiting most Americans. Meanwhile, H.R. 1 scales back Medicaid spending and includes healthcare provisions that could leave 14 million Americans uninsured. These cuts target the most vulnerable, including many of my students' families. The burden will shift to our state, straining Wisconsin's budget without helping working families. As an educator, I see how federal programs support our community's children and families. The new paperwork requirements could cause millions to lose ACA coverage, including Wisconsin families depending on marketplace plans. My husband and I work in teaching and industry. We save, budget carefully, and make hard financial decisions to live debt-free. We proudly pay taxes knowing they improve our communities and help those facing hardship. We don't want our tax money funding $4.5 trillion in tax breaks for the wealthy. We don't want it rolling back environmental protections that keep our family safe. We don't want it funding harsh immigration enforcement instead of comprehensive solutions helping people become productive community members. This isn't just the president's or Congress' budget—it's every American's budget, funded by our taxes. Wisconsin families deserve responsible fiscal management investing in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, not tax giveaways to those who need them least. I urge you to vote against this budget and work with colleagues to develop one that prioritizes working families, maintains essential safety net programs, and makes fiscally responsible choices with taxpayer dollars.
