Protect freedom of the press & the public’s right to know

I'm writing to express my deep concern about a serious threat to press freedom and freedom of speech in our country. According to a recent Associated Press report, the Pentagon has imposed new restrictions on journalists covering the Department of Defense. These restrictions prompted several respected reporters to relinquish their access credentials rather than comply with policies they described as unprecedented and potentially censorious. This is not just a procedural issue—it is a direct attack on the public’s right to know. The free press plays a critical role in holding power accountable, especially in matters of national security. When journalists are forced to operate under vague or restrictive rules, the result is less transparency and more unchecked authority. These new access rules, reportedly introduced under the leadership of Pentagon spokesperson Pete Hegseth, appear to be politically motivated. They risk turning defense reporting into a controlled narrative, rather than objective journalism. That is dangerous in any democracy. I urge you to: Speak out publicly against these press restrictions; Demand full transparency from the Department of Defense on how and why these new policies were implemented; Support or introduce legislation that protects journalistic access across federal agencies and ensures reporting remains independent and free from political interference. The press must be free to inform the public without coercion, obstruction, or fear of retaliation. What happens at the Pentagon affects every American. Journalists must be able to do their jobs without compromise. Please stand up for a free press and take action to stop these restrictions before they set a harmful precedent.
