Demand Transparency and Coordination After El Paso Airspace Closure
To: Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Self
From: A constituent in Princeton, TX
February 12
The abrupt closure of El Paso airspace late Tuesday night, followed by its reopening hours later on Wednesday, represents a dangerous failure in federal coordination and transparency that put lives at risk and undermined public trust in aviation safety.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy claimed the FAA and military acted swiftly to address a Mexican drug cartel drone incursion. However, a Capitol Hill source told NPR that the Defense Department deployed counter-drone technology before the FAA completed its safety assessment, revealing a coordination failure rather than the swift response the administration described. Representative Veronica Escobar, who represents El Paso, directly contradicted the administration's narrative, stating that Congress was told something entirely different and that the information from the administration does not add up.
The human cost of this chaos was immediate and severe. Mayor Renard Johnson reported that medical evacuation flights had to be diverted to Las Cruces, New Mexico, 45 miles away. He emphasized that you cannot restrict airspace over a major city without coordinating with the city, airport, hospitals, and community leadership, calling it a major and unnecessary disruption not seen since September 11, 2001.
The FAA made this decision in Washington without notifying Representative Escobar or local El Paso officials. This lack of communication is unacceptable when emergency medical services depend on clear airspace and when millions of travelers rely on accurate, timely information about aviation safety.
Cross-border drone activity is not unusual along the U.S.-Mexico border, as cartels have long used drones for surveillance and smuggling. If this common occurrence triggered a ten-day airspace closure over a major metropolitan area, the FAA's protocols are fundamentally broken.
I urge you to demand a full investigation into this incident, require the FAA to establish clear coordination protocols with the Defense Department and local authorities, and ensure transparent communication with the public about aviation safety decisions. Travelers worldwide and El Paso residents deserve better than the chaos and confusion this episode created.
