I’m writing to ask you to oppose any resolutions calling for an Article V Constitutional Convention in Ohio.
While some advocates may present this as a responsible way to enact reforms like term limits or a balanced budget amendment, I’m deeply concerned about the risks. There are no clear rules for how a convention would be run, no precedent to follow, and no guarantee it would stay limited to a single issue. Even prominent constitutional scholars across the political spectrum have warned that a convention could spiral out of control, potentially jeopardizing hard-won rights and protections.
Our Constitution is not perfect, but it’s foundational to our democracy. A convention opens the door to rewriting it under immense political pressure and influence—without adequate safeguards.
Please protect the stability of our constitutional system and vote against any proposal that would trigger or support an Article V convention in our state.
