The lies spread by some Republican politicians and their “civilian” allies (e.g. Elon Musk on X) in the wake of Hurricane Helene—and in the lead up to Hurricane Milton — are repugnant and anti-American; they are also putting first responders and ordinary citizens in danger by reducing confidence in FEMA and other relief services. These lies are taking hold in a big way on Facebook, X and other platforms.
I see that Rep. Chuck Edwards (R NC) has issued a statement debunking many of these fantastical lies (that the Government/ Democrats are causing the hurricanes, that hundreds of bodies are being left to rot in rivers and more).
These lies are completely out of hand.
Please let all of us constituents hear the truth from you about what FEMA and other federal agencies are doing to help victims of these hurricane. Also, please make this a top priority in your conversations with the media.
The FACTS of what the government is actually doing have been almost completely swallowed up by these lies. I ask that do your part to get the truth out and I expect our local and national medial to also step up act forcefully and responsibly and tell us the truth. Lives are at issue and there is no time to lose.
Also, please look into whether or not there is a way to stop this kind of life threatening swirl of organized disinformation. I am totally fed up with trying to combat this garbage as an ordinary citizen. This sort of disinformation campaign is irresponsible and dangerous. If there isn’t a law against it there should be.
