Oppose Deep-Sea Mining Plans That Threaten Global Marine Ecosystems

To: Rep. Carey, Sen. Husted, Sen. Moreno

From: A constituent in Columbus, OH

April 25, 2025

I’m writing to urge you to speak out and take action against the executive order advancing deep-sea mining in U.S. waters—an area nearly every other coastal nation agrees should remain off-limits to industrial exploitation. This reckless move sidesteps a decades-old international treaty, the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea, ratified by almost every major coastal nation except the United States. Instead of acting as global stewards of our oceans, this decision threatens fragile marine ecosystems we barely understand and risks irreversible environmental damage in pursuit of short-term profit. We should be leading in sustainability and science, not setting a dangerous precedent for unregulated resource extraction. Please oppose this executive order and support legislation or oversight that halts deep-sea mining initiatives. Our oceans—and our global reputation—depend on it. Thank you.
