I urge you to reconsider establishing a state-run migrant detention center in Nebraska modeled after the controversial "Alligator Alcatraz" facility in Florida. While the stated goals of increasing efficiency and deterring illegal immigration are understandable, detaining people in prison-like conditions surrounded by hazardous terrain sets a problematic precedent. There are more humane and ethical approaches that uphold human rights and due process. The "Alligator Alcatraz" model has faced significant criticism for allegedly violating the constitutional rights of detainees by denying access to immigration courts and legal assistance. Reports of unsanitary conditions, denial of religious rights, and limited access to basic necessities like water are deeply concerning. No matter one's immigration status, all human beings deserve to be treated with dignity. Rather than replicating this troubling approach, I respectfully request you explore alternatives that address immigration issues through fair and lawful means, without compromising ethical principles or jeopardizing people's wellbeing. Prudent and moral solutions do exist if we approach this complex challenge with wisdom, compassion and respect for human rights. Nebraska can lead by example in finding a better way forward.
