Defend our democracy

I am writing to you, not just as a concerned constituent but as an American who is alarmed at the direction our country is heading. Congress – your branch of government – is abdicating its power to a man who openly aspires to dictatorship. With every step, our Democratic institutions are being dismantled, and those who swore to uphold the constitution seem content to standby as it is pushed aside, both figuratively and literally. The recent removal of the federal archives is just one of many warning signs. Trump‘s latest Napoleonic posturing has garnered dangerous support from extremist right wing militia groups, some of whom are now openly vowing to “fight”for him. Meanwhile, our government is alienating every ally we have, throwing science out the window, and eliminating every agency or office that ensures government integrity. The very system of checks and balances meant to protect our democracy, has been eroded to the point of dysfunction. Even the Supreme Court, once a pillar of justice, has become a partisan tool rather than an impartial arbiter of the law. And who benefits from this chaos? Not the American people, but a handful of megalomaniac billionaires and foreign autocrats like Orban and Putin – – figures who Trump openly admires, and seeks to emulate. Is this really the future you are willing to accept? Is maintaining Republican control so important to you that you would sacrifice the very democracy that allows your party to exist in the first place? I ask you directly: do you still have any integrity? Do you have any plans to uphold your oath to defend the constitution? Or will you continue to stand by as the foundation of our democracy is torn apart? History will remember those who fought for democracy and those who enabled its destruction. Which side will you choose?
