An Open Letter

To: Sen. Merkley, Sen. Wyden

From: A constituent in Gaston, OR

October 11

I am writing as your constituent to urge you to support legislation that permanently ends the biannual practice of changing our clocks. The rationale for Daylight Saving Time is outdated, and the disruption it causes twice a year carries measurable costs. Studies consistently demonstrate that the transitions—particularly the spring shift—disrupt circadian rhythms, leading to a documented spike in cardiovascular events, workplace injuries, and fatal motor vehicle accidents in the days immediately following the change. Beyond public safety and health, shifting the clock disrupts agricultural routines, complicates childcare schedules, and hurts workforce productivity without delivering meaningful energy savings. Whether Congress moves to make standard time or daylight saving time permanent, the priority should be stability. Most Americans agree that changing our clocks twice a year serves no modern purpose and creates unnecessary friction in daily life. I respectfully ask that you prioritize and vote in favor of bipartisan efforts to establish a single, year-round time standard. Thank you for your time, service, and consideration of this issue.
