Repeal the Policy Giving the Attorney General Unchecked Prisoner Transfer Authority

To: Sen. Curtis, Pres. Trump, Sen. Lee, Rep. Owens

From: A verified voter in West Jordan, UT

July 1

Repeal the new policy granting the Attorney General unilateral authority to transfer any federal prisoner to any prison in the country. This power grab bypasses the Federal Bureau of Prisons, which exists precisely to make these decisions based on public safety, facility capacity, and the specific circumstances of each case. The DOJ should not be writing its own rules to override that process. When a single political appointee can move prisoners anywhere in the country without checks, it opens the door to abuse — punishing inmates for political reasons, separating people from their legal counsel, or ignoring legitimate safety concerns. The Bureau of Prisons has established procedures for a reason. Congress needs to step in and strip this authority before it becomes entrenched. Block this policy and restore proper oversight over federal prisoner transfers.
