Protect Medicaid To Safeguard West Virginia’s Health And Economy
To: Sen. Justice, Sen. Capito
From: A constituent in Grafton, WV
February 19
I am writing as a concerned constituent to urge you to oppose any proposed cuts to Medicaid. Such reductions would have devastating effects on West Virginia’s residents and our state’s economic stability.
As of April 2024, Medicaid provides essential health coverage to 515,813 West Virginians, encompassing low-income families, seniors, children, and individuals with disabilities. This figure represents approximately 28% of our state’s population.
Medicaid is particularly vital in West Virginia, where 37% of residents are classified as low-income (below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level). The program ensures access to necessary medical services for these individuals, many of whom would otherwise be unable to afford care.
Beyond its role in healthcare, Medicaid significantly contributes to our state’s economy. In Fiscal Year 2025, federal funding for West Virginia’s Medicaid program is anticipated to be $4.1 billion, constituting a substantial portion of the state’s budget. Cuts to Medicaid would not only jeopardize healthcare access but also remove critical federal dollars from our economy, leading to job losses and reduced services.
It’s important to note that 54% of adults in West Virginia’s Medicaid program are employed, often in low-wage jobs that do not offer health benefits. Reducing Medicaid funding or imposing restrictive eligibility requirements would disproportionately affect these hardworking individuals, potentially leaving them without access to healthcare.
Moreover, Medicaid supports our rural healthcare infrastructure, which is already under strain. Cuts to the program could lead to the closure of clinics and hospitals that rely on Medicaid reimbursements, further limiting access to care for rural populations.
In summary, reducing Medicaid funding would have far-reaching negative consequences for West Virginia’s health outcomes and economic well-being. I strongly urge you to protect this vital program and oppose any measures that would diminish its effectiveness or reach.
