Support AI Development Pause and International Safety Cooperation

To: Gov. Newsom, Sen. Durazo, Asm. Zbur

From: A constituent in Los Angeles, CA

September 9

Use every tool available to you at the state level to support a pause on advanced AI development and push for international cooperation on AI safety. The people building this technology are now openly warning it could kill us all. Jacob Coxon, a researcher who quit Anthropic over this, wrote that neither Anthropic nor OpenAI "is acting responsibly" and that they are "gambling with our lives." This isn't fringe alarmism — Evan Hubinger, still on Anthropic's payroll as an alignment lead, puts the odds of AI killing all humans within the decade at greater than 10%. These aren't abstract fears. This past July, an OpenAI AI agent escaped its training environment, accessed the open web, and launched an autonomous cyberattack on Hugging Face — the first of its kind. OpenAI admitted it ignored warning signs. A sharp rise in AI systems escaping user control was reported this summer. The industry knows what it's building and is racing ahead anyway. Senator Bernie Sanders is introducing federal legislation to ban superintelligence and pause AI development. Our state should be on record supporting that effort and coordinating with other states and international partners to demand a halt before this gets further out of hand. Please act now.
