Accountability for ICE

To: Rep. Sewell

From: A constituent in Birmingham, AL

January 27

I am writing to demand immediate accountability and congressional oversight of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following recent, deeply disturbing actions. The detention of Liam, a five-year-old child, during an ICE operation is unacceptable and inhumane. No child should be used or harmed in the course of federal enforcement. Equally alarming is the killing of Alex, a U.S. citizen who was exercising his First and Second Amendment rights. Subsequent official statements surrounding these incidents appear to conflict with eyewitness accounts and video evidence, further eroding public trust. ICE must operate within the bounds of the law and the Constitution. This includes transparent identification of agents — federal officers should not conceal their identities with masks — and honest communication with the public. Officials who knowingly provide false or misleading statements must be held accountable. I urge you to support independent investigations, enforce meaningful oversight of ICE and DHS, prohibit enforcement tactics that endanger children, and ensure consequences for unlawful conduct and deception by federal officials. Our democracy depends on accountability, transparency, and respect for civil and human rights. I expect your leadership on this issue. Sincerely,
