An Open Letter

To: Sen. Sullivan, Sen. Murkowski, Rep. Begich

From: A constituent in Anchorage, AK

April 22

I am writing to express my profound concern over the growing influence of Russell Vought and the deeply troubling implications of his leadership in Project 2025. His vision for the future of American governance poses a direct threat to the integrity of our democratic institutions, the impartiality of our civil service, and the foundational values enshrined in our Constitution. As one of the chief architects of Project 2025, Mr. Vought is advocating for a radical overhaul of the federal government, most notably a sweeping reclassification of tens of thousands of career civil service positions into political appointments. This move would eviscerate the independence of federal agencies by flooding them with partisan loyalists, dismantling the professional, merit-based workforce that has served our nation through administrations of all political stripes. The result would be an unstable, deeply politicized bureaucracy beholden to ideology rather than public service. Equally alarming is Mr. Vought’s explicit desire to consolidate executive power and sideline essential regulatory and oversight bodies. Under the guise of reform, this agenda would undermine vital safeguards, silence dissenting voices within the government, and strip away the balance of powers designed to protect our republic from authoritarian overreach. This is not reform; it is the systematic dismantling of a government accountable to the people. Perhaps most concerning is Mr. Vought’s unapologetic promotion of Christian nationalism as a guiding principle of governance. This is a flagrant violation of the First Amendment and a direct affront to the religious pluralism that defines the American experience. No citizen should fear marginalization because of their faith or lack thereof, but Mr. Vought’s worldview leaves no room for such inclusion. Congress must take this threat seriously. Oversight must be exercised with urgency and resolve. The nonpartisan integrity of our civil service must be preserved, not politicized. And above all, we must reaffirm our commitment to the Constitution by rejecting the dangerous fusion of church and state that Mr. Vought seeks to impose. Our democracy is not self-sustaining. It relies on the vigilance and courage of those sworn to protect it. I urge you to stand against these corrosive efforts and act swiftly to defend the institutions that uphold our freedoms.
