I am writing to urge you to vote against H.R. 9495, the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act. While I understand the intent behind this bill, I have significant concerns about its potential consequences.
The bill’s provision to postpone tax deadlines and provide financial relief to Americans detained abroad is commendable. However, the broader implications of terminating the tax-exempt status of organizations could have unintended negative effects. This measure might inadvertently impact legitimate non-profit organizations that operate in conflict zones or areas with high risks of terrorism, potentially disrupting their humanitarian efforts.
Moreover, the criteria for determining which organizations support terrorism could be overly broad and subject to misuse, leading to legal and financial challenges for innocent entities. This could undermine the trust and effectiveness of non-profits that provide critical services in volatile regions.
I believe that a more targeted approach is necessary to address the issue of terror financing without jeopardizing the operations of legitimate organizations. I urge you to consider these concerns and vote against H.R. 9495 in its current form.
