The Republican Redistricting Power Grab is a Betrayal of Texans

To: Rep. Cunningham, Gov. Abbott, Sen. Creighton, Lt. Gov. Patrick

From: A constituent in Kingwood, TX

August 15

Your party’s decision to ram through an extreme redistricting plan was not about serving Texans. It was about serving yourselves. By drawing districts to predetermine outcomes, you have admitted you cannot win fair elections. That is weakness disguised as strategy, and the people see it. You forced this corrupt process knowing it would grind the Legislature to a halt, drive Democrats out of the state, and delay critical bills that affect schools, infrastructure, healthcare, and disaster recovery. Every delay, every stalled bill, every missed opportunity to govern — that is on you. This was not a normal legislative dispute. It was a calculated attack on the very idea of representative democracy in Texas. Gerrymandering at this scale is nothing more than a scam to rob voters of their voices. You have shown that your loyalty is not to the people you represent but to your party bosses and donors. It is actively corroding our democracy, pushing states like California and New York who historically have worked to make their districting less gerrymandered, now degrade to match your depraved behavior. Texans are not blind. Voters in competitive areas will remember who took away their choice at the ballot box. You have traded the dignity of public service for short-term partisan gain, and in doing so, you have proven unfit for the trust of your constituents. I urge you to reverse course, support fair redistricting during the standard times, and focus on actually governing. If you will not, then be prepared to face the voters you have tried to silence.
