Oppose Partisan Gerrymandering in North Carolina's Congressional Map

I am writing to express my deep concern over the recently proposed congressional map for North Carolina. This new redistricting plan, put forth by Republican legislative leaders, appears to be a blatant attempt to eliminate the Democratic seat currently held by Rep. Don Davis in the 1st District. The proposal would dramatically alter the district from its current slightly Democratic-leaning composition to one that favors Republicans by a significant margin of 55% to 44%. This redistricting effort is not just about one seat. It would effectively eliminate all swing districts in North Carolina, with even the closest district (the 11th, held by Rep. Chuck Edwards) leaning 54% Republican to 44% Democratic. Such a map fails to represent the diverse political landscape of our state and undermines the very essence of fair representation. The timing and motivation behind this redistricting are particularly troubling. It appears to be a direct response to calls from former President Donald Trump for Republicans to eliminate Democratic seats to maintain control of the U.S. House in the 2026 midterms. This nakedly partisan approach to map-drawing goes against the principles of democracy and fair representation that should guide our electoral process. I urge you to consider the will of North Carolina voters. A September poll revealed that large majorities across party lines oppose gerrymandering. By pushing forward with this map, you would be acting against the wishes of your constituents, both Republican and Democratic. Governor Josh Stein has rightly condemned this move as antidemocratic, stating that Republicans are "failing the voters." I implore you to heed these words and reject this proposed map. The fact that this plan can pass with a simple majority and is not subject to the governor's veto makes it even more crucial that legislators act with integrity and in the best interests of all North Carolinians. As your constituent, I ask you to stand against partisan gerrymandering and advocate for a fair, nonpartisan redistricting process. Our democracy depends on maps that accurately reflect the will of the people, not the interests of a single party. Please vote against this proposed congressional map and work towards a solution that ensures every North Carolinian's vote carries equal weight.
