Pass Binding AI Regulation Now — Self-Policing Has Already Failed
To: Gov. Newsom, Asm. Lee
From: A constituent in San Jose, CA
October 4
Pass binding AI regulation. The "voluntary constitution" tech leaders signed at the White House last week is not a serious accountability mechanism — Trump himself admitted it's only "morally" binding. We watched social media companies make the same promises a decade ago, and the result was unchecked harm to millions of people. We cannot repeat that mistake with technology that is far more powerful.
Former FTC Chair Lina Khan is right: Congress needs to legislate. We have a proven framework for governing transformative and dangerous industries — railroads, pharmaceuticals, nuclear power — and AI deserves the same treatment. OpenAI has already been hacked twice in recent weeks, hitting Australian government agencies, while company executives claim their systems are "going rogue." That is not a self-policing problem. That is a public safety crisis that demands enforceable standards, mandatory transparency, and real consequences for companies that cut corners on safety.
