The proposed bills H.B. 445 and S.B. 293 violate the constitutional principle of separation of church and state by effectively promoting religious programs in public education. Mandating that public school districts provide time during the school day for religious instruction off campus is an overreach of state power into local control. It sets a dangerous precedent of the government endorsing and facilitating religious indoctrination of students, which undermines the secular nature of public schools. The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment requires religious neutrality in public institutions like schools. These bills disregard that by stripping school districts of their right to refuse questionable religious programs or set their own policies regarding releasing students for extracurricular religious activities. Public schools must welcome students of all faiths and beliefs without favoring any particular religion. Furthermore, groups like LifeWise Academy abuse this system to actively proselytize their narrow Christian beliefs to children, including teachings against LGBTQ+ identities. Their recruitment efforts in public schools blur the line between religious freedom and religious coercion. While individuals have the right to their beliefs, public schools should remain free from such sectarian influences. Preserving local control and upholding constitutional principles is crucial. I urge you to reject these bills that compromise religious neutrality and the separation of church and state in Ohio's public education system. Protect students' rights to an inclusive, secular learning environment.
