22nd Amendment
To: Sen. Husted, Rep. Carey, Sen. Moreno
From: A constituent in Dublin, OH
April 7
I write to you today not merely as a concerned citizen, but as an American watching the foundation of our republic being tested in ways the Framers specifically sought to prevent. President Trump’s recent statement that he is “not joking” about seeking a third term represents a direct challenge to the 22nd Amendment and the constitutional guardrails that protect our democracy from sliding into autocracy. Let me be clear: Your silence on this matter makes you complicit. When a president openly declares his intention to violate the Constitution, it is not merely political rhetoric or “just talk” that we can dismiss. We’ve already seen how the president’s “talk” has transformed into concrete action—from implementing widespread tariffs despite warnings of economic harm, to mass deportation operations, to dismantling environmental protections exactly as promised. When President Trump speaks of his intentions, history has shown he means to act on them. The Framers’ greatest fear was the concentration of power in a single individual who could not be removed from office. This is precisely why presidential term limits were enshrined in our Constitution. George Washington himself established the two-term precedent specifically to prevent the presidency from becoming a lifetime appointment resembling monarchy—the very system our nation was founded to reject. As my representative who has sworn an oath to “support and defend the Constitution,” you have a duty that transcends party loyalty. This isn’t about policy disagreements or partisan politics—it’s about preserving the very system of government that allows our democratic process to function. The Constitution doesn’t defend itself; it requires elected officials with the courage to uphold their oaths of office, especially when tested. I demand that you publicly condemn these statements and make it unequivocally clear that any attempt to remain in office beyond constitutional term limits would face your active opposition. Anything less is a betrayal of your oath and the people you represent. Our democracy survives only when its guardians are willing to protect it, particularly when the threat comes from within. The choice before you is stark: Will you be remembered as someone who stood for the constitution and the people when they were directly challenged, or as someone who remained silent while the foundations of our republic were undermined? History will judge harshly those who had the power to speak but chose comfort in silence. I expect not just a response, but concrete action. The American experiment depends on officials like you fulfilling your constitutional duty, particularly in moments of crisis. I, and many others in you profess to serve, will be watching closely.
