Pass the Social Security Fairness Act
To: Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn
From: A constituent in Cleburne, TX
November 23
Dear Senator-
As you may know, the House passed the Social Security Fairness Act on November 12, 2024. This is a long overdue step in the right direction and I am writing to you today to ask for your help to get this passed through the Senate ASAP.
The Social Security Fairness Act will repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO). If you are from a state where these provisions and offsets apply, you already know that many of your constituents are suffering because of them. If you are from a state where they do not apply, please support your colleagues and the millions of American workers they impact. If you’re not familiar with these laws, they exclusively punish educators, firefighters, police officers, and other public service workers by reducing and in some cases eliminating their social security benefits.
The GPO extends to spousal/survivor benefits. Additionally, these archaic and punitive laws discourage people from pursuing public service careers and it’s time to make things right. My husband is a retired firefighter from Grapevine and I’m a nurse and a midwife who hopes to one day retire! Let’s help folks retire with the dignity and benefits they’ve earned and let’s help make public service a more attractive path to more folks.
Respectfully,
Tania Lopez,
Nurse midwife, nurse educator, advanced practice nurse.
