As an Alaskan, I take pride in living in a state with a deep tradition of independence, service, and sacrifice. Alaska has long played a central role in protecting America’s security, with our strategic military bases and the thousands of servicemembers and veterans who call this state home. That makes it all the more disturbing to witness how President Trump has twisted the role of the military and dismantled the constitutional checks and balances that protect our democracy. Since Inauguration Day, Trump has worked to consolidate power in ways that should alarm every Alaskan, regardless of party: • He has deployed the military into American cities and threatened to weaponize them against the so-called “enemy within”—ordinary citizens and political opponents. • He has used emergency powers to bypass the law, attacked judges and courts who ruled against him, and bulldozed Congress’ authority over tariffs, budgets, and military authorizations. • He has sought to silence dissent, control speech, and punish those who refuse to bend to his will, while using his office for personal profit and political retaliation. In Alaska, we understand the importance of constitutional duty. Our men and women in uniform swear an oath not to a president, but to the Constitution of the United States. It is an insult to their service to see our military threatened with political misuse. And it is dangerous for our country when Congress allows its constitutional role as a co-equal branch of government to be eroded. If any other president had committed even one of these abuses of power, removal would have been on the table. This steady march toward authoritarianism cannot be ignored. I am asking you to uphold your oath of office, defend the Constitution, and take real action to stop Trump’s dictatorial rule. Alaska may be far from Washington, D.C., but we are not removed from the consequences of unchecked power. Please stand up for democracy, for Alaska, and for the future of this nation
