The recent resignations of Kristi Noem and Greg Bovino do not address the systemic problems in federal immigration enforcement. Alex Pretti was pepper-sprayed, beaten, and shot in the back while filming an ICE agent who had shoved a woman to the ground. Renee Good is dead. In Texas, ICE agents allegedly choked a man to death. Detainees have been denied medical care. These are not isolated incidents but symptoms of an enforcement system operating without meaningful accountability.
The administration's personnel changes appear designed to deflect attention while the underlying tactics and lawlessness continue unchanged. Tom Homan is still running ICE operations in Minnesota, and the policies driving these abuses remain in place.
Reports indicate that detainees are being denied phone calls, access to legal counsel, and basic necessities like adequate food and sanitation. This treatment violates fundamental human rights and undermines any claim to lawful enforcement. When federal agents believe they can act with impunity, violence escalates. The pardons of January 6th insurrectionists and statements about agent immunity have created an environment where officers expect protection regardless of their actions.
I urge you to use every available legislative tool including a partial government shutdown to demand accountability. Block appropriations bills that fund these operations without strict oversight requirements. Investigate and remove officials who enable this conduct. Vote against confirmations of officials who would allow this contact to continue. Federal officers must wear visible identification and uniforms without masks, use body cameras, operate only with signed judicial warrants, follow court orders, and face prosecution when they break the law.
No taxpayer dollars should fund the mistreatment of anyone, immigrant or citizen. Personnel changes mean nothing without significant structural reform up to and including dissolution of ICE. I need to know what specific actions you will take to ensure federal agents are held to enforceable standards and that victims of abuse have real recourse.
