Reject unethical outsourcing of US incarceration to El Salvador

The proposal to jail American convicts in El Salvador's prisons raises significant human rights concerns and undermines principles of justice and due process. Outsourcing our prison system to another nation abdicates our responsibility to uphold the humane treatment of inmates and ensure their access to fair legal proceedings. Overcrowding, inadequate facilities, and potential abuse in El Salvador's prisons, as documented by the State Department, make this an unacceptable arrangement that compromises the dignity and wellbeing of incarcerated individuals. Furthermore, this unprecedented measure sets a concerning precedent for the mass deportation and extraterritorial incarceration of foreign nationals, including legal residents. It disproportionately targets vulnerable communities like undocumented immigrants and gang members, perpetuating cycles of marginalization and discrimination. Rather than pursuing draconian policies that undermine human rights, we should prioritize comprehensive criminal justice reform, address the root causes of crime and migration through ethical and sustainable solutions. I urge you to reject this proposal outright and instead focus efforts on strengthening our domestic justice system, improving prison conditions, and promoting restorative approaches that uphold the fundamental rights and humanity of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status or criminal record. Outsourcing incarceration is an unethical abdication of our moral and legal obligations.
