Immediately Release All Children From Immigration Detention

To: Rep. Joyce, Sen. Husted, Sen. Moreno

From: A constituent in Willoughby, OH

April 20

I demand you take immediate action to release all children from immigration detention facilities and permanently close these centers. More than 1,700 children have been detained since spring 2025 in facilities with documented inadequate medical care, unsafe food and water, and psychological abuse including separating parents from children as punishment. Five-year-old Liam Ramos was taken from his Minneapolis school and transported over 1,000 miles to the Dilley, Texas detention center, where he was held with hundreds of other young children in substandard conditions. Dilley recently experienced a measles outbreak. Pediatricians report that children exposed to these enforcement actions suffer disrupted sleep, panic attacks, learning difficulties, and persistent anxiety. The trauma of detention and separation from caregivers causes irreparable harm to children's physical and mental development. You must prohibit immigration enforcement at schools, healthcare facilities, and other places where children gather. These raids terrorize entire communities and prevent families from accessing medical care, education, and basic necessities. Children belong in their communities and schools with their families, not detained in facilities that harm them. I expect you to demand immediate congressional oversight of detention conditions and support permanent closure of family detention centers.
