I am writing to demand that you oppose the administration's attempt to fund $350 billion of its $1.5 trillion defense request through budget reconciliation.
This is not a policy debate; it is an assault on Article I authority. Using reconciliation to push through massive military spending is a procedural trick designed to dodge the 60-vote Advice and Consent threshold. By avoiding a bipartisan vote, the majority is intentionally shielding this historic request from the oversight and public debate that Regular Order requires.
The facts of this failure are clear:
- Abdication of Oversight: Bypassing Regular Order for $350 billion in funding—including investments in AI and munitions—prevents a cost-benefit analysis and leaves the public in the dark.
- Zero Fiscal Accountability: The conflict in Iran has already cost $25 billion in just two months. Folding more billions into a reconciliation package ensures this spending remains un-vetted and unchecked.
- Procedural Cowardice: You cannot claim to be upholding your oath to the constitution while staying silent as the executive branch uses loopholes to bypass constitutionally mandated Congressional input.
I urge you to demand that all defense spending be subject to a full, bipartisan debate on the House or Senate floor. I will be monitoring this vote as a litmus test for your commitment to the Rule of Law and your oath to uphold Article I of the Constitution.
