Protect the USPS, a Constitutional and Essential Public Good

To: Rep. Crenshaw, Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn

From: A constituent in Spring, TX

March 18

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the current financial crisis facing the United States Postal Service. Recent reports and testimony from the Postmaster General indicate that the USPS may exhaust its liquidity by early 2027 if Congress does not intervene. I urge you to take immediate legislative action to ensure this vital institution remains fully operational and accessible to all Americans. USPS is not merely a business; it is a fundamental pillar of our democracy and economy. It is one of the few federal entities explicitly authorized by the U.S. Constitution under Article I, Section 8, Clause 7. For over two centuries, this "Postal Power" has bound our nation together. I ask that you uphold your oath to the Constitution by ensuring that the "Post Offices and post Roads" it authorizes continue to serve the people. For many in remote areas, the USPS is the only carrier that delivers "the last mile" at a reasonable cost where private competitors often refuse to go. Seniors rely on the mail for the delivery of life-saving medications, Social Security checks, and essential correspondence. Low-cost shipping allows local entrepreneurs to compete in a global marketplace. While I understand the need for fiscal responsibility, current statutory debt limits and pricing constraints prevent the USPS from adapting to modern cha llenges. Please support measures to raise the borrowing cap, protect 6-day delivery, provide the financial flexibility necessary to prevent total cessation of services. The mail is a public service, not a profit center. Please prioritize the preservation of the USPS to ensure that every American, remains connected to the rest of the country. Thank you for your time and for your service!
