The state has taken significant steps to address homelessness by allocating $89 million for affordable housing development and services for individuals experiencing homelessness. However, more can be done to comprehensively tackle this complex issue. The additional funding will create nearly 2,200 new affordable homes statewide and support crucial services like emergency shelters and transitional housing. Still, the need for affordable housing and resources for the homeless population exceeds the current allocation. A sustained, multi-faceted approach is required to meaningfully reduce homelessness rates across Arizona. Ongoing investments in permanent supportive housing, mental health and substance abuse treatment, job training programs, and preventative measures are vital to provide stability and pathways out of homelessness. The state should explore further opportunities to partner with local governments, nonprofits, and the private sector to expand solutions and ensure no Arizonan is left without a safe place to call home.
