I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I am opposed to the president continuing to escalate the situation in Los Angeles by sending increased military forces, contrary to state desires.
The president directly created this tense situation in California by his continued hate rhetoric towards immigrants and decisions to ramp up immigration enforcement in ways that infringe on not only their rights but those of all Americans.
Now he continues to order more and more troops -- first the National Guard and now Marines -- in a way that is escalating tensions. It is also directly against the process of law and desires of the California state government. These demonstrations are not, as the president has stated, "a form of rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States," but a protest against the harsh and at times illegal arrest, detainment, and deportation of immigrants.
This is yet another case of the president seeking to enlarge the authority of the executive branch, above and beyond states' rights and the checks and balances written into our Constitution. Please call immediately for a reversal of these actions and accountability for the executive branch.
