Constitutional overreach

To: Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Sessions

From: A constituent in Huntington, TX

September 26

I am writing with deep concern regarding recent actions by President Trump and his administration that threaten both constitutional protections and the safety of people within the United States. These actions are not abstract policy debates — they carry immediate and dangerous consequences for every American. The U.S. military recently attacked three boats in the Caribbean Sea, killing at least 17 people suspected of smuggling drugs. No judge or jury determined these individuals had committed any crime. Instead, we are expected to accept Trump’s unilateral claim that they were guilty. We do not know who these people were, whether they were foreign nationals or Americans, nor whether the number killed was limited to 17. What we do know is that the President assumed the authority to execute people without due process. This precedent is terrifying. If a president claims the right to kill anyone merely suspected of drug trafficking, what prevents that same power from being turned against U.S. citizens — including political critics, journalists, or ordinary people accused without evidence? There are several reports of ICE, not following due process and just locking people up because of the color of the skin or the language they speak. This is very troubling. And anticonstitutional. I have also heard reports of ICE discounting people’s paperwork and saying it is no good and throwing it away. This needs some serious oversight, to stop this anticonstitutional behavior on the part of law-enforcement and on the part of the president and his administration. I am not assigning blame to federal agents tasked with carrying out orders. But I urge you, as my elected representative, to stand firmly against these authoritarian practices. Congress must act to safeguard constitutional actions and keep the president from thinking he has unilateral power to bypass due process and silence dissent. This is not just about protecting vulnerable communities; it is about protecting the very freedoms and democratic principles that define our nation. I ask you to use your voice and your authority to resist these dangerous precedents before they place all of us in jeopardy. Thank you for your time and attention to this urgent matter.
