Reject Unconstitutional Nonprofit Crackdown in HR 9495

To: Sen. Merkley, Rep. Chavez-DeRemer, Sen. Wyden

From: A verified voter in Clackamas, OR

November 21

I am again writing to you to vote no on HR 9495. This proposed legislation poses a grave threat to the nonprofit sector and civil society as a whole. By empowering the Treasury Secretary to unilaterally strip organizations of their tax-exempt status based on an overly broad and vague definition of "terrorist-supporting," it opens the door for discriminatory and politically motivated targeting of nonprofits critical of the administration or whose advocacy runs counter to its agenda. This violates core constitutional principles of due process and undermines the vital role nonprofits play in a healthy democracy. While we all condemn actual material support for terrorism, this bill goes far beyond that. It creates a loophole ripe for abuse to silence dissenting voices and punish nonprofits without requiring substantive evidence or providing a fair process to challenge such designations. Stripping tax-exempt status would cripple many organizations' ability to operate and serve their communities. For these reasons, I urge you to vote no on HR 9495. The nonprofit sector has sounded the alarm, and this bill represents an unacceptable overreach that threatens foundational American values of free speech and assembly. Please stand firm against any attempt to grant this or any administration unchecked power to unilaterally punish civil society organizations. The consequences for our democracy would be severe. Vote no to protect nonprofit advocacy, civic engagement, and constitutional rights.
