I am writing to demand that you publicly and forcefully oppose President Trump's repeated suggestions to cancel the upcoming midterm elections. In a closed-door Reuters interview published Thursday, Trump stated that because of his accomplishments, "we shouldn't even have an election." This marks at least the second time this month he has floated canceling elections, having previously suggested it during a Kennedy Center speech on the five-year anniversary of the January 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection.
This is not a joke, despite White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt's dismissal of his comments as "speaking facetiously." Trump has a documented history of these statements. In 2020, he proposed delaying elections due to Covid-19. In 2022, he wrote that alleged fraud allowed for "termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution." In August 2025, while speaking with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he spoke approvingly of suspending elections during wartime.
The United States has never postponed a presidential election in its 250-year history. We maintained election schedules during the Civil War in 1864, during World War II in 1942 and 1944, and during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Under Article I, Section 4 of the Constitution, election administration is vested in the states, with Congress holding power to alter regulations. The president has no authority over federal election timing.
Legal experts like Ken White acknowledge Trump "wants to" cancel elections and "it's plausible he'll try." Meanwhile, Trump has handpicked election officials urging him to declare a "national emergency" for unprecedented federal powers over elections, and he has suggested the National Guard seize voting machines.
Your silence on this matter is unacceptable. I need to hear you publicly condemn these statements and commit to defending the constitutional right of Americans to vote in November. Will you stand up for democracy, or will you remain silent while a president openly contemplates canceling elections?
