H.R. 845 Undermines Science, the Courts, and the ESA
To: Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla
From: A constituent in Redding, CA
December 18
I am writing to strongly urge you to oppose H.R. 845, recently passed by the House of Representatives, which would strip Gray Wolves of protections under the Endangered Species Act and prohibit judicial review of that decision.
This bill sets a dangerous precedent. The Endangered Species Act exists to ensure that decisions about wildlife conservation are based on the best available science, not political pressure. H.R. 845 undermines that framework by legislating species status directly and blocking the courts from fulfilling their constitutional role as a check on agency and legislative overreach.
Gray Wolves are a keystone species with an outsized role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Their recovery remains incomplete and uneven across the West. Removing federal protections at this stage ignores well documented science about habitat connectivity, genetic diversity, and ongoing threats from habitat loss and conflict driven mortality.
Equally troubling is the provision barring judicial review. Preventing courts from reviewing agency actions weakens democratic accountability and erodes long standing environmental law. Regardless of one’s position on wolves, Congress should not be shielding decisions from legal scrutiny.
As a constituent who values science based decision making, responsible land management, and the rule of law, I urge you to vote no on H.R. 845 and oppose any effort to advance it in the Senate.
