I am writing as a New York resident to respectfully urge you to sign the CREEP Act into law. No one should have to wait until stalking escalates into violence before they can seek protection. Unfortunately, under current New York law, many stalking victims have no access to a civil order of protection simply because the person stalking them is not a family member or former intimate partner. This leaves victims of stalking by acquaintances, coworkers, neighbors, clients, strangers, and online predators with few meaningful options until the situation becomes a criminal matter. The CREEP Act closes this gap by allowing victims to petition for a civil anti-stalking order, giving them a way to seek protection before their lives are turned upside down. It does not create new criminal penalties. Instead, it provides a practical legal tool that many other states already offer their residents. Stalking can be devastating. It affects victims' sense of safety, their mental health, their ability to work, and their willingness to participate in everyday life. In an era where technology allows harassment to continue around the clock, our laws must reflect the realities people face today. The New York Legislature recognized this need by passing the CREEP Act with unanimous bipartisan support. I hope you will honor that consensus and stand with victims by signing this important legislation.
