Urgent: Covid-19 Vaccine Affordability and Leadership Accountability in Texas
To: Gov. Abbott
From: A constituent in Austin, TX
September 5
I am writing to you as a constituent, a college student in Austin, and someone with underlying health conditions, to raise urgent concerns about public health access and leadership in our state. These issues are not abstract policy debates. They directly affect my ability, and the ability of thousands of Texans like me, to stay safe and healthy. Recently, I received the newest Covid-19 vaccine and was surprised to be charged $80 out of pocket despite having health insurance. This has never been the case before. In earlier rounds of Covid vaccination, my doses were fully covered, which made it possible for me and many others to stay up to date with protection. This change in coverage sets a dangerous precedent. For students balancing tuition, rent, and basic living expenses, or for working families already stretched thin, an unexpected cost like this creates a barrier to care. For people like me, who rely on timely vaccination because of health vulnerabilities, the consequences could be severe. Texas has an opportunity, and I would argue a responsibility, to step up where federal support has scaled back. I urge you to work with state agencies, insurers, and the legislature to ensure that vaccines remain affordable, accessible, and covered without hidden costs. Preventative care saves money and lives, while financial barriers increase the strain on our healthcare system and put communities at greater risk of outbreaks. I am also deeply concerned about the influence of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in public office. His long track record of promoting dangerous conspiracy theories and vaccine misinformation undermines science, erodes public trust, and directly threatens the health of Texans. Leaders who spread disinformation and endanger vulnerable communities should not hold positions of authority. Texas must make it clear that public health is not up for political games and that misinformation has no place in governance. Governor, the wellbeing of Texans, especially students, families, and those with underlying health conditions, depends on leadership that puts science, health, and safety first. I am asking you to take action on two fronts: to ensure vaccine affordability remains a priority in Texas, and to reject the harmful influence of figures like RFK Jr. who threaten the trust our communities need in times of crisis. Thank you for your time and your leadership. I hope you will act swiftly to protect Texans from unnecessary healthcare costs and from leaders who undermine the foundations of public health
