Congress must defend rule of law, curb executive overreach

To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff, Rep. Friedman

From: A constituent in Los Angeles, CA

February 19, 2025

The Trump administration's actions have significantly undermined the rule of law and undermined the system of checks and balances enshrined in the Constitution. By illegally seizing power not granted by the Constitution, empowering an unelected billionaire to control government functions, and defying court orders, the executive branch has engaged in a dangerous power grab that threatens our democratic system of government. Congress must forcefully reassert its authority as a co-equal branch of government. Immediate steps are needed to restore funding withheld in violation of Congressional appropriations, disband the unaccountable Department of Government Efficiency, remove Elon Musk from any governmental role, and hold the administration accountable for its unconstitutional overreach. The foundational principles of democracy, transparency, and separation of powers are at stake. Congress has a constitutional duty to serve as a check on the executive branch's blatant abuse of power and flagrant disregard for the rule of law.
