Pass anti-gerrymandering reforms to protect voting rights

To: Sen. Moreno, Rep. Joyce, Sen. Husted

From: A constituent in Willoughby, OH

August 7

In recent years, the Supreme Court has issued rulings that grant states broad leeway in redrawing electoral districts, diminishing federal oversight intended to protect voting rights and enable fair representation. The court's decisions have empowered partisan gerrymandering, allowing parties in power to manipulate district boundaries for political gain at the expense of electoral integrity. This threatens the core democratic principle of one person, one vote. While the Voting Rights Act aimed to safeguard minority voters' access to the political process, the Supreme Court has steadily eroded its protections. Last week's order signals a willingness to further weaken the landmark law by questioning the constitutional basis for race-conscious redistricting intended to comply with the Act's requirements. Such a ruling could deal a devastating blow to voting rights nationwide. These concerning judicial trends demand a legislative response to restore meaningful checks on redistricting abuses and ensure all Americans have an equal voice in choosing their representatives. Without statutory intervention to establish clear anti-gerrymandering standards, the foundational promise of representative democracy will continue to be undermined. We urge Congress to prioritize reforms that promote fair redistricting processes driven by nonpartisan criteria rather than partisan interests.
