This Is a Constitutional Emergency—Congress Must Act Now
To: Sen. McCormick, Sen. Fetterman, Rep. Scanlon
From: A constituent in Wayne, PA
April 5
I write to you not out of partisanship, but out of alarm. We are witnessing an active erosion of the rule of law in this country—driven by executive overreach, lawless behavior, and a blatant disregard for the checks and balances that define our democracy. If Congress continues to remain passive or reactionary, history will not forgive this moment of inaction. The Trump-aligned agenda is no longer about policy—it is about power unchecked by law. In recent months alone, we have seen: • ICE operating beyond legal boundaries, targeting communities with unconstitutional raids, detentions without due process, and deceptive tactics that violate basic civil liberties; • Tariff powers abused as a tool of personal politics, circumventing congressional authority and functioning as illegal taxation on the American people; • Draconian cuts to public education and research, gutting the Department of Education and defunding the very science and innovation that secure our nation’s future; • Ongoing threats to Social Security and Medicare, disguised as “reform” but clearly aimed at dismantling vital safety nets that millions rely on; • A strategic dismantling of institutional norms, from ignoring court rulings to floating defiance of election results and judicial independence. This is not governance—it is authoritarianism creeping in through executive action, and Congress has the duty and the power to stop it. I demand that you: 1. Immediately open full-scale investigations into all agencies and departments violating statutory or constitutional limits, starting with DHS, ICE, and the Department of Education; 2. Introduce or co-sponsor emergency legislation to strip back abused emergency powers, restore congressional authority over tariffs and budget allocations, and reassert limits on executive action; 3. Use the power of the purse to defund any programs or departments acting in contempt of legal or constitutional limits; 4. Hold public hearings that expose the truth to the American people—because transparency is now a national defense priority; 5. Refuse to normalize this behavior. Language matters. Silence is complicity. I am not interested in platitudes or campaign slogans—I am demanding action. You swore an oath to defend the Constitution. That oath means nothing if not tested under pressure. This is that moment. If you will not act now, when will you? And if Congress cannot stop a presidency from operating beyond the law, what is Congress for? Please reply with specifics—what steps your office is taking, what legislation you support, and how you plan to ensure these abuses are not swept under the rug. We are watching. The country is watching. And history is watching.
