I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I have lost all respect and trust in our president after his posting on social media yesterday for Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is to honor those who served our country bravely and gave their time, hearts, and often lives to keep us safe. Instead, our president used this as yet another opportunity to lash out against his own personal enemies, again co-opting something that has deep personal and national meaning for Americans into his own agenda and purposes.
I come from a family of veterans. My father fought in the Navy during Vietnam and instilled in us a true and heartfelt respect for those who serve. My grandfather served on the Japanese front during WWII. My father-in-law and brother-in-law were both proud Marines.
Please stop listening and following in lockstep with someone who cannot show basic respect and decency for our nation and its people. Please be a voice for those of us in Wisconsin who cherish this country and care for soldiers and their families. Whether it is in making decisions about the national budget, or about the simple but long-established fact that we have three branches of government, not one -- please act in a way that honors the Americans you were elected to serve, as our president has forgotten that this is his job as well.
