Allowing Elon Musk's private company SpaceX to provide input on FAA air traffic control modernization raises significant concerns over conflicts of interest. SpaceX's launch activities already impact commercial air traffic, leading to flight delays and diversions, as seen during the recent failed Starship test flight. Giving SpaceX influence over the systems governing national airspace directly benefits their business at the potential expense of aviation safety and efficiency. The cozy relationship between SpaceX and the Department of Transportation risks undermining public trust in the FAA's impartiality and core mission of ensuring the highest levels of air travel safety. Federal agencies must be independent and free from undue influence by the very companies they are tasked with regulating. Significant guardrails need to be put in place to prevent real or perceived regulatory capture that prioritizes corporate interests over the public good. At a minimum, the FAA should be fully transparent about the nature of SpaceX's role and publicly disclose any advice or recommendations provided. An independent review should also assess potential conflicts and ensure robust safeguards. The public deserves full confidence that aviation safety decisions are made through rigorous analysis by career transportation safety experts, not unduly swayed by companies seeking to advance their own commercial interests. Protecting the integrity of this critical national infrastructure is paramount.
