Oppose HB2197

To: Rep. Schofield, Gov. Abbott, Lt. Gov. Patrick, Sen. Huffman

From: A constituent in Katy, TX

February 1, 2025

The proposed House Bill 2197 is a direct attack on reproductive rights and personal freedoms. By redefining life as beginning at fertilization, it would effectively criminalize common forms of birth control like IUDs and emergency contraception. This extreme legislation threatens to turn doctors, healthcare providers, and even women using contraception into potential criminals facing harsh penalties including life imprisonment or the death penalty. Moreover, it jeopardizes access to vital fertility treatments like IVF by granting legal personhood to embryos. This bill does not protect life - it strips away the fundamental right of individuals to make private healthcare decisions about their own bodies. It undermines essential medical care and paves the way for increased surveillance, prosecution, and denial of services. Such an oppressive measure would particularly harm marginalized communities already facing barriers to reproductive healthcare. I urge you to firmly oppose HB 2197 and any attempts to criminalize birth control and restrict access to vital reproductive services. The government has no place dictating personal healthcare choices. Protect our constitutional freedoms and right to bodily autonomy by rejecting this dangerous overreach.
