Vote No on HB 162 and SB 71 to Protect Alabama's Water Sources
To: Rep. Shaw, Sen. Waggoner
From: A constituent in Vestavia Hills, AL
February 15
I am writing to urge you to vote no on HB 162 and SB 71, legislation that threatens Alabama's water sources and the health of our communities.
Clean water is fundamental to public health, economic prosperity, and quality of life across Alabama. Our state's rivers, lakes, and aquifers provide drinking water to millions of residents, support agriculture and industry, and sustain ecosystems that define our natural heritage. Any legislation that compromises water quality or accessibility puts all of these at risk.
I am deeply concerned that HB 162 and SB 71 could weaken protections for our water sources at a time when we should be strengthening them. Alabama has already faced significant water quality challenges, from industrial contamination to agricultural runoff. We cannot afford policies that prioritize short-term interests over the long-term security of our water supply.
The consequences of degraded water quality extend far beyond environmental concerns. Contaminated water sources lead to increased healthcare costs, reduced property values, and economic losses for communities that depend on clean water for tourism and recreation. Once water sources are compromised, remediation is extraordinarily expensive and often incomplete. Prevention through strong protective legislation is both more effective and more economical.
I ask that you consider the constituents who depend on you to safeguard their access to clean, safe water. This is not a partisan issue but a matter of basic public health and responsible stewardship of Alabama's natural resources. Future generations will judge us by how well we protected the water they need to survive and thrive.
I respectfully request that you vote no on HB 162 and SB 71. Please prioritize the health and safety of Alabama's residents over any interests that would compromise our water quality. I would appreciate hearing your position on these bills and your commitment to protecting our water sources.
